CRITICS HAVE THEIR PLACE, AND HERE IT IS
From Reviews of Various Musical Shows, reviews, and concerts
EARLY REVIEWS
The ADVOCATE

(Scrumbly;) A San Francisco institution in his own right.

The VOICE

..strong tenor voice and an impression of a Holiday Inn pianist that would delight Lily Tomlin

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Steven Winn

The message might not wear so well if it weren't for Scrumbly Koldewyn's sweet, apt lyrics and tuneful music.

CITY ARTS

Arrangements of standards are strong; instead of sounding dated, they resound vibrantly.

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Scrumbly Koldewyn's arrangements and musical direction are so stunning...

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Bernard Weiner

The key to the group's success is a sharp ensemble sound, arranged to perfection by musical director/ composer Richard "Scrumbly" Koldewyn. The arrangements, many a capella, are unusually complex and clever, the accompaniment upbeat and on-beat. This is a tight group, thanks to Koldewyn..

BAY AREA REPORTER

Joseph W Bean

Scrumbly is familiar and popular with review and musical audiences n San Francisco, but I have never heard him play cabaret accompaniment before. All I can say is that I hope this first time is not the last. The sensitivity, responsiveness, and spirit of Koldewyn's support for Cynthia's (Bythell) singing was far beyond what is usually expected of piano accompaniment

THE SUN REPORTER

Lee Hartdrave

The musical direction by Scrumbly Koldewyn (who also sings with the group in the show dubbed "The Jesters") is amazing. if he made a record the grooves would wear out quickly.

SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER

Philip Elwood

Koldewyn, who looks like the young Anson Weeks, is a veterean review performer and an outstanding arranger-director..... Koldewyn's song selection is splendid....He really is a man for all musical seasons

BAY AREA REPORTER

Bernard Spunberg

Horray for Scrumbly Koldewyn. As usual, his creative musical direction makes the most of limited resources

EXPRESSIVE CREATIONS (Radio)

Tom Kepler (From a review of The Jesters' Singing Fools)

Koldewyn....There is something about his very presence on stage that brings a smile to your face, and his physical comedy, while quite subtle, is delivered to perfection. The quality of his first tenor voice, especially the control in the highest passages, will amaze you

BAY AREA REPORTER

John Karr (from a review of The Jesters)

....he brings to the Jesters' repertory of 1930's pop a similar iconclastic and freshly invigorating sensibility, which takes the songs seriously at the same time it acknowledges their frivolity and frequent silliness. He knows when to lovingly caress a standard and when to give it a little goose......Koldewyn's are surprisingly original arrangements, at once musically fulfilling in their obeisance to their period, but also full of left jabs, delightful jokes, and a novelty that keeps the audience nimbly at attention.....

REVIEWS OF THE JESTERS VOCAL TRIO
Which kept Scrumbly busy for 14 years as arranger and 1st tenor
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Gerald Nachman

...The Jesters, a sleek, wry, irrepresable trio.....get more out of and old song since any trio since the Manhattan Transfer (or, for that matter, the Boswell Sisters) and may be ready for Manhattan themselves..They're 50 times as good as The Four Sweaters.

NÜRNBERGER NACHRICHTEN (Germany)

Vocalists of the highest musicality!...... In a successful mixture of original and classic arrangements, the Jesters disseminate impish fun which quickly infects the audience.

FULDAUR ZEITUNG (Germany)

A consummate concert, the quality of which was best expressed by the demand for so many encores.

REVIEWS OF THE UNTAMED STAGE or DIE WILDE BÜHNE (1999)
SF WEEKLY, Mar 17

Michael Scott Moore

....This mixture of hot jazz and comedy goes on all night.......(Scrumbly) Koldewyn himself is almost as comic as his name.......
The only trouble with The Untamed Stage is that it won't outlast the month of March. Then the city's cabaret scene will lapse into its usual torpid state

SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER, Mar 8

Robert Hurwitt

Air of authenticity in latest review of '20s German music

....features a bright selection of songs, genuinely entertaining numbers and a fair degreee of infectious attitude.....Koldewyn provides sparkling piano accompaniment
